The saxophonist plays that note that no one hears and
hangs there, momentarily before letting it drop drop drop.
In an instant, that melody expands in our ears
while all around us, the audience jumps, jives, wails
in the seats, grooving to the sound of life,
as if the game of "telephone" were being played out on a manuscript
of some classical composer
instead of zooming around in the mind of the musician,
improvising to the inner muse
of jazz.
